Sustainability and climate adaptation in urban environments
More and more of the world's population lives and works in cities. This, in combination with climate change and its consequences, creates increased pressure on the built environment and the people living in cities. There is a need to develop urban environments that can address these challenges, such as extreme weather events, conflicts over land use, and deteriorating ecosystems. Additionally, the goals of achieving zero emissions need to be met.
At CEC, we study the implementation and use of methods for green space management and how nature-based solutions can be applied in cities and in urban environments. We work with physical planning and policy analysis, combined with ecological methods, to assess the effects of different approaches on both ecosystem services and human well-being.
We employ a wide range of quantitative and qualitative methods, ecological field studies, remote sensing, ecosystem service modeling, document analysis, surveys, interviews, and participatory methods. Together with practitioners, we develop and promote the use of generated knowledge to foster the development of sustainable cities.
Our focus encompasses urban environments in Sweden and worldwide, through extensive collaborations in teaching and research.
