DuneFront - Enhanced Coastal Protection with Nature-Based Solutions

The DuneFront project was launched in January 2024 and aims to protect our coastlines by combining natural sand dunes with man-made dikes. The idea is that these nature-based solutions can contribute to robust flood defences while also promoting biodiversity.

The DuneFront project is a multidisciplinary European collaboration involving seven countries, with participation from universities, organisations, and companies. At Lund University, the project is managed by the Centre for Environmental and Climate Science in collaboration with the Division of Water Resources Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering. The project is also part of the university's thematic area Nature-Based Future Solutions.

In the first phase, twelve study areas across Europe will collect and evaluate the necessary data and experiences to develop practical recommendations and support systems for future coastal protection. In Sweden, coastal areas in the Ystad municipality are included in the project.

In the second phase, models will be used to simulate and improve decision-making processes for protecting beach and coastal areas in Europe.

"The project team at CEC will examine which values are considered and impacted in the planning and construction of coastal protection. This could involve enhancing opportunities for biodiversity or incorporating social values such as recreation, aesthetics, and tourism potential," says researcher Helena Hanson.

The project is expected to be completed by 2027.
