Jagdeep Singh

Dr. Jagdeep Singh is Associate Professor in Environmental Science at the Centre for Environmental and Climate Research (CEC). In his academic career so far, he has investigated the societal sustainability challenges by applying novel approaches, devising innovative assessment frameworks, and adopting methods and tools from other research fields. Specifically, he has advanced the field of sustainable production and consumption in emerging areas such as circular economy, reuse, product repair and upcycling, the sharing economy and sustainable business innovation. Dr. Singh has conducted inter- and trans-disciplinary research with an impact in academia and society.

He is currently investigating challenges and opportunities associated with deriving biomass from agricultural land in Sweden for bioenergy purposes and mitigating climate change. The research addresses various conflicts and synergies between fulfilling societal demands for bioenergy and food while ensuring sustainable production and conservation of fertile soils and biodiversity. The research employs a variety of research methods for data collection and analysis, such as participatory backcasting, group model building (causal loop diagrams), and stakeholder interviews and workshops. 

During his postdoctoral research at the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE), he evaluated the social, economic, and environmental impacts of sharing economy or collaborative consumption. Previously, he has worked as a Research Fellow in Sustainable Business at Nottingham Trent University and was a member of the Centre for Industrial Energy, Materials and Products (CIE-MAP) in the United Kingdom. He worked on identifying and evaluating environmentally sustainable business practices focusing on resource efficiency and the circular economy.

Jagdeep has a very diverse educational and professional profile. He has pursued Doctor of philosophy and Licentiate of Engineering (Industrial Doctorate) in Industrial Ecology at KTH Royal Institute of Technology Stockholm, Sweden. His research work focused on addressing the challenges to the current global resource management paradigm and proposed a broader systems approach to waste management. He has also pursued a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Himachal Pradesh University) and a Master’s in Energy Studies (renewable energy technologies) - an interdisciplinary master’s program offered at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi.

Apart from the above activities, he has great interests in environmental philosophy, social psychology, astronomy, and morality. He also writes inspirational short stories for children.
